Honda CBR1000RR SP2 Fireblade

The basic model of the Superbike World Championship has always been simple: start with production-based motorcycles and modify them for maximum performance on the track.

That concept is highly effective when the platform is the 2019 CBR1000RR Fireblade.

The Fireblade is offered in three models; the standard, SP, and SP2 – the last of which is a homologation model produced specifically for superbike racing and the most finely distilled embodiment of Honda’s “Next Stage Total Control” supersport concept.

While the championship is production-based, even Honda’s production supersport machines utilize technology derived from the prototype world of Grand Prix racing. For example, the Fireblade SP2’s Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) is based on that of the MotoGP Championship-winning RC213V, measuring front and rear wheel speeds and body roll angle, while also using attitude-detection technology developed for ASIMO, Honda’s humanoid robot. Electronic settings separate Traction Control from Wheelie Control, enabling precise tuning, and the engine’s combustion chamber and valves are optimized for power output and delivery. Additional RC213V technology includes elongated spark plugs and a water jacket that fits closely around the combustion chambers, features intended to maximize cooling. The piston rings have a Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating for a superb sealing property, and the oil pan and ignition cover are made of magnesium to minimize weight. A titanium exhaust can is fitted, helping to concentrate mass low and toward the motorcycle’s centre. For shaving fractions off of lap times, the already razor-edged performance can be further enhanced with a performance upgrade kit (available only to qualified race teams).

The CBR line has always been renowned for its handling prowess, and that’s especially true of the SP2 version, whose gold-coloured Marchesini wheels minimize unsprung weight. A titanium fuel tank keeps weight low, and Brembo four-piston monobloc radial-mount brake calipers offer incredible stopping power. The walls of the aluminium frame’s twin spars have optimized thicknesses for minimum weight and appropriate flex characteristics, as do those of the swingarm.

Put it all together, and the Moriwaki Althea Honda Team has a premium production package around which to build a highly capable race machine.
